Astros Trade Rumors

The non-waiver trade deadline in MLB is approaching and teams will have to decide if they are buyers or sellers. The Astros, despite being in the destitute NL Central, should be sellers, but they don’t have much in the way of valuable commodities.  Their most highly prized assets are at the end of their bullpen, Brad Lidge, Chad Qualls and Dan Wheeler. All three have had good success the past several years, and many contending teams would like to shore up their late-inning relief corp. In addition to the bullpen, the Astros might find a buyer for Jason Jennings. They traded three young players for Jennings this past offseason, and so far the trade has been a bust. However, if Jennings stays healthy between now and the trade deadline, a contender hungry for starting pitching might overpay for him with young talent. That might turn out to be the best possible outcome to make the best of a bad situation. Jennings’ value would be enhanced if the consensus number one available starting pitcher, left-hander Mark Buehrle of the White Sox ends up signing an extension with them and drops off the trade market.
