Compensation for Victims of Va. Tech Shooting

Lawyer Who Directed Sept. 11 Compensation to Oversee Virginia Tech Program – New York Times

Kenneth R. Feinberg, the Washington lawyer who directed the federal program to compensate relatives of victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, will oversee the distribution of the $7 million that has been donated to Virginia Tech after the April campus massacre, university officials said Thursday.

I suppose the horses have already got out, but this notion that the families of people who lost loved ones should be compensated seems strange to me. This case is somewhat different, because the money is from private donations, whereas the Sept. 11 victims received over $7 billion in public money.
