Birth Control for Dogs

The article describes a non-surgical means of birth control for dogs (males only apparently). A device implanted beneath the skin releases some kind of hormone that suppresses the production of sperm and renders the dog sterile for a number of months without castration. I wonder what the implications are for dog shows? The A.K.C. requires dogs to be intact to be shown, so I wonder if they would allow dogs with this kind of device in the ring.

ABC News: Birth Control Goes to the Dogs

For some pet owners, especially men, keeping their dog “intact” — with testicles — is important.”You always run into people who have an emotional attachment to their dog’s testicles,” said Dr. Marty Becker, a veterinarian working in Idaho.

That’s an unfortunate quote though.
