Cardinals’ Irrational Hopes for Second-Half Surge Dealt a Blow

Too bad.

STLtoday – Sports – Cardinals

Rehabilitating starter Chris Carpenter’s next start is “undetermined” after the 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner suffered renewed stiffness and swelling of his right elbow following Sunday’s three-inning start for Class A Palm Beach.Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said Friday that Carpenter suffered “a bit of a setback” after a 39-pitch appearance and could not provide a timetable for when his ace might resume his throwing program.

“We’ll re-evaluate it after someone sees him,” La Russa said. “I don’t know what it is or how substantial it is. But it’s something.”

The club has based much of its optimism for a second-half push on Carpenter’s availability for the season’s final two months.
