Tim Purpura’s Nightmare

Keith Law calls($) the Wheeler-Wigginton trade a head-scratcher and speculates that the D-Rays will try to flip him for something better, maybe even before Tuesday. (h/t MLB Trade Rumors)

However, the Rays will more likely keep Wheeler moving, or at least will shop him aggressively in the next 48 hours to see if they can do better than the Astros did. Given the number of contenders in search of relief help — by my count, approximately all of them — it seems probable that they’ll be able to do better, and if they don’t get an acceptable offer, they can keep Wheeler and try to deal him in the offseason or even next July.

Not to get all Richard Justice here, but if the D-Rays turn Wheeler into a more valuable commodity by Tuesday, then that should be the nail in the coffin for Tim Purpura. I don’t know who they bring in, but blowing a trade like that, together with the Jennings move in the off-season are enough failure.
