Good Music

Although I didn’t follow my heart and grab an ACL wristband at the last minute, I have gotten to see a couple of cool aftershows this weekend. Last night was Robert Earl Keen at the Parish Room. Smaller venue that you don’t get to see him in too often any more. Reminded me of the first couple times I saw him in Houston at Rockefeller’s. He had an excellent set and played a good mix of new stuff and older, quieter stuff that doesn’t work as well in the outdoor amphitheater venue.

Tonight it was Raul Malo, as part of the Magnificent Trio, upstairs in the Gallery of the Continental Club. He played the festival this afternoon and from the reports online, it sounds like he played the same set tonight, but we had the benefit of being inside with air-conditioning. We didn’t get the trumpet player though. The Gallery is the size of a large apartment and there were quite a few patrons who seemed to have been drinking all day at the festival and weren’t in the mood to be quiet and listen, but curmudgeonly snarking aside, it was a really good show. Seeing him was a bit of a dilemma, because downstairs in the Continental Club, James McMurtry was playing, but he’s in Austin often enough that I’ll be able to see him there some other time.

I hear Alejandro Escovedo is at the Continental Club tomorrow night.
