I’m late to the party on this one, but the Slingbox seems like a really cool gadget. Basically it hooks up to your TV source (be it cable, satellite, DVD, whatever) and your local network and enables to you watch the feed from any networked computer. It’s been on the market for at least a year now I think, but I became aware of it over here, because that’s how the TexasExes group in London watches some UT football games that aren’t broadcast on satellite over here. Basically, they have a friend in Houston with a Slingbox hooked up to their cable box and using a laptop with internet access at a bar here, they are able to watch the game live over the internet. The picture quality isn’t great, especially when they hook it up to a projector and blow it up, but its watchable and doubtless would be just fine on a typical LAN.

  1. So what is to prevent someone from allowing their friends to steal cable? I guess the picture quality?

  2. I’m pretty sure there is some sort of login/authentication for each Slingbox so that access is restricted.
